There was a steakhouse shuffle last September when both the Steakhouse at Azul and Donovan's Steak & Chophouse near UTC both announced their closures at around the same time. The reality was that after not being able to come to terms with its landlord after a nearly 15 year tenancy, the soon-to-be-displaced Donovan's approached the Brigantine restaurant group, made 'em an offer they couldn't refuse and bought the Azul location at 1250 Prospect Street in La Jolla. After ceasing its operations at the UTC location on January 3, which will become an incarnation of Rick Bayless's Red O restaurant, the new Donovan's in now officially open, pouring Martinis and grilling prime steaks with a side of Pacific views. Check it out!

It does not appear like Donovan's made too many changes to the 7,800 square foot space formerly occupied by Azul. Offering that classic steakhouse look and feel in both menu and design, the new Donovan's should fit nicely into Prospect Street's restaurant row. Chef Sal Reynoso is leading the brigade as Executive Chef of the La Jolla location. Donovan's also has two other locations - in downtown San Diego and Phoenix, Arizona.
The Irvine Company, owners of Donovan's former location at 4340 La Jolla Village Drive in the Golden Triangle, has found a new tenant for its space in the form of celebrity chef and Top Chef Masters winner Rick Bayless, who will be expanding his Red O Restaurant concept to San Diego in early 2016. The existing restaurant space will be torn down in order to build a new 8,000 plus square foot building with an additional 2,000 square foot of al fresco dining.
