Specializing in Northern Chinese cuisine, the recently opened Village North restaurant adds a touch of modern nostalgia to Kearny Mesa’s bustling dining scene.
At an early age, UCSD graduate Steven Ji first dreamed of opening a restaurant in San Diego that specializes in Chinese food just like his grandma makes, from a region of China that’s underrepresented in America's Fines City. This Memorial Day weekend, Ji sees his dream come to fruition with the official grand opening of Village North, a unique Chinese restaurant that San Diego has been pining for.
"There’s long been a shortage of authentic Northern Chinese cuisine in San Diego" said Ji, "Village North is here to fill that void. You’ll find nothing Americanized on the menu. Each and every dish we serve has to pass the 'would my Grandma approve?' test."
Fueled by nostalgia and family traditions, the 109 seat venue with private dining room options boasts a bright, open and modern decor, with cool blue lighting accentuating a welcoming crescent shaped bar. Ji spent almost half a year remodelling the former sushi joint that it now replaces on Convoy Street. The kitchen is seamlessly zoned to house three chefs under one roof - one specializing in Northern Chinese fare, one in Southern and one in barbecue. While each chef might demonstrate their own unique flare in the colorful dishes they present, they are united by a commitment to authenticity.

"Every dish is a labor of love" continues Ji. "Everything from the broths to the noodles is proudly made by our chefs from scratch. We aim to share this contagious passion for faithful regional dishes with all our guests."
Open until 2am at the weekends with a late night menu of hot and cold dishes, guests can look forward to signature delights such as melt-in-the-mouth pickled cabbage and pork hot pot, beef dry pot, sweet Chinese yam and braised chicken with Chinese mushrooms.
"I’m positively overwhelmed by the feedback we’ve received so far," said Ji. "I’m really proud of what we will be bringing to the San Diego dining scene and I think my grandma will be, too."
