Snooze, an A.M. Eatery | All Ready to Open in Del Mar Highlands Towne Center

September 4, 2013

Hailing from Denver, but known locally for its Hillcrest location, Snooze, an AM Eatery has earned a reputation as one of the hottest breakfast spots around (and, according to Zagat, one of the best restaurants in SD in 2013). Soon North County residents will be able to get their fix a little closer to home, as Snooze has taken over IHOP's former location in Del Mar Highlands Town Center and is scheduled to open on Friday, September 6.  We recently sampled the new Snooze and can attest that they are consistent and remain ready to satisfy their customers with approachable food executed with care and a flexible menu that's ready for the most creative customizations.

Del Mar's new Snooze is certainly a quainter version of its Hillcrest counterpart, but includes the same design personality and lively vibe that keeps San Diegans lining up.  The interior embraces the spirit of the American diner, with round communal tables, a long breakfast bar, booth-lined walls, and garage door windows opening to a front patio.

Behind the bar, local craft beers beckon you to drink early, and infused spirits summon you to the diversified cocktail list. We sampled the spicy bloody mary, and the name doesn't lie, as the jalapeno-infused vodka kickstarts the taste buds and readies you for something sweet.

We ordered the pancake flight with some delicious modifications.  Of the three options to fill, we chose wisely - a blueberry danish pancake (the pancake of the day); a white chocolate chip and banana whisky pancake with cinnamon butter; and lastly, the OMG French Toast.  Good. Great. Grand!  If you know Snooze, you know that they know innovative pancakes, and as far as the OMG, I'd likely add an expletive between the M and the G

Backyard BBQ Benny on left, Chilaquiles on right
You can't go wrong when choosing from Snooze's Benedicts.  The Chilaquiles Benny may be the most famous, but a new star in town is the Backyard Barbecue Benny, with house pulled Niman Ranch BBQ pork served atop jalapeno-cream cheese spoonbread and topped with poached egg, smoked cheddar hollandaise and house pickle pieces.  This bad boy is BBQ for breakfast, and it works beautifully. Don't forget that you can mix and match bennies - or even get just one.

At Snooze, it's tough to stray from the pancakes and bennies, but we had to try the corned beef hash.  Snooze's signature shredded hash is a mixed with incredible crunchy corned beef, carmalized poblanos and onions and topped with two eggs any style and toast or tortillas. Next time, I'm having them roll this dish up into a burrito. Oh yeaaaa!!!!

One day Snooze will likely have locations across the United States. This restaurant does breakfast right, and continues to do it unlike anyone else. Del Mar, get ready, and be sure to stop by before the word gets out and the hungry start lining up.  The early bird gets the benny!  Snooze, an AM Eatery will open in Del Mar just in time for the weekend rush. Get there.
