Boudin SF Brings the Flavor of Fresh-Baked Sourdough To San Diego’s Balboa Mesa Shopping Center | Free Bread for a Year for First 100 Guests on Opening Day, October 2

September 12, 2014

Fresh-baked sourdough bread will soon be available at San Diego’s Balboa Mesa Shopping Center.  Boudin Bakery CEO Sharon Duvall today announced that the company will open Boudin SF at Balboa Mesa on October 2, continuing its Southern California expansion.  Boudin SF is a casual-dining restaurant where guests can enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner.  San Diegans can soon savor the unforgettable experience of breaking open an aromatic loaf of The Original San Francisco Sourdough in a location close to home.  Balboa Mesa marks the company’s third San Diego restaurant and follows the recent opening of Boudin SF in Huntington Beach in early September.
“We are thrilled to open our third location in San Diego,” said Duvall.  “We are extremely thankful for our loyal Boudin sourdough fans and excited to welcome our new neighbors in the Clairemont community.”

On September 23, Boudin Bakery will transport its legendary Mother Dough, first cultured in 1849 and present in every loaf of Boudin sourdough, from San Francisco to its newest location in San Diego.  Leavened only with wild yeast “caught” from San Francisco’s fog-cooled air, Boudin’s original Mother Dough has been replenished with flour and water every day for 165 years.  In keeping with French baking traditions, accomplished bakers mix, shape, score and bake Boudin’s bread daily.  Each loaf takes 72 hours to create and is served fresh from the oven.  As one of the world’s oldest culinary celebrities, the Mother Dough will receive a police escort to mark her arrival at San Diego’s new Boudin SF in the Balboa Mesa Shopping Center.

When Boudin SF at Balboa Mesa Shopping Center opens its doors to the public on October 2, the first 100 guests in line will win a year’s supply of The Original San Francisco Sourdough.  Boudin enthusiasts, affectionately known as “Bread Winners,” often camp overnight to ensure a spot in line and may begin queuing up at 5:00pm on October 1.  Boudin SF has reserved the first place in the Bread Winners line for The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank.  The largest hunger-relief organization in San Diego County, the San Diego Food Bank distributed 22.3 million pounds of food and served an average of 320,000 people per month in 2013.  Boudin SF has long been a supporter of local food banks and regularly donates fresh bread to local charities.

In celebration of the new Boudin SF at Balboa Mesa Shopping Center, Boudin is hosting a “Virtual Bread Winners’ Event,” inspired by the overnight camping experience, open to residents of San Diego County.  To participate, contestants can simply post a photo or video to Facebook, Twitter or Instagram showing what they would do with a year’s supply of The Original San Francisco Sourdough.  Entries will be accepted until September 22 at 11:59pm and must be tagged with #makemeabreadwinner.  Finalists will be announced on Facebook on September 23, and Boudin fans will be able to vote for their favorite entries.  Voting closes on September 28 at 11:59pm, and the entry that receives the most votes will win a grand prize of one free loaf of Boudin sourdough every day for a year.  Five runners-up will receive a free loaf of Boudin sourdough every week for a year, and four honorable mentions will take home a free loaf of Boudin sourdough once a month for a year.  All winners must be available to redeem their bread in person at any Boudin SF location. To enter, visit Boudin on Facebook at facebook.com/boudin or on Twitter and Instagram at @boudinbakery.
