Another San Diego institution is on its way out. The Red Sails Inn, which has been serving up fresh-catch seafood in San Diego since the 1920s (since 1957 at its current location) will close its doors at 2614 Shelter Island Drive in Point Loma at the end of August. The Brigantine Group will take over the space to open the first location of its new seafood and craft beer concept Ketch Grill & Taps.
Owned and managed by the Dargitz family for the past 25 years, Red Sails Inn has been in Point Loma since 1957, but the original Red Sails location
first opened in 1935 at the foot of G Street & Harbor Drive in San Diego's downtown Embarcadero area. This turns out to be an ironic coincidence, because last year the
Brigantine Group was chosen to redevelop the more northerly Embarcadero area where Anthony's Fish Grotto currently sits.

The Brigantine Group opened its first eatery in 1969 and now has a dozen locations of its Miguel's & Brigantine restaurant concepts and employs over one thousand people. Ketch Grill & Taps is the company's new concept for a casual craft brew pub and seafood-centric restaurant that will open within the Red Sails space after an extensive remodel. Another location of that same concept will also be a part of the Embarcadero redevelopment project, set to begin construction in early 2017.

Brigantine President Mike Morton has indicated that the restaurant will give hiring preference to existing Red Sail employees and will consider leaving some of Red Sails' most popular menu items on Ketch's menu. The Red Sails space will officially change hands after close of business on August 31.
Ketch Grill & Taps is anticipated to open in Point Loma as early as December 2016.
