Chef Steve Brown has been all over the local culinary scene in 2017. He's opening the gigantic The Shipping Yard brewery and restaurant in his hometown of Imperial Beach later this year. He took over the former Shima Japanese space in Coronado to have a permanent home for his Cosecha pop-up dinners, where he has been hosting a themed-meal almost weekly. Now news is out that Chef Brown is heading the kitchen at Bar Logan, a new gastropub set to open at 2163 Logan Avenue in San Diego's Barrio Logan neighborhood as early as this summer.
Owned by Alan Cassell's Barrio Concepts LLC, Bar Logan is a 1,600 square-foot craft beer & wine bar and restaurant that will open in Barrio Logan as early as this July. The food menu will be designed by Chef Steven Brown and center around modern American shared plates with a Baja-twist. Behind the bar, expect plenty of local craft beers and a curated wine list from Fernando Gaxiola of Baja Wine + Food. There will also be an outdoor back patio and a private dining area and event space. The eatery is expected to open by June.
In the meantime, Chef Brown will continue his Wagyu-focused dinner series, including a dinner on March 17 with Chef Claudette Zepeda Wilkins (Executive Chef of incoming El Jardin Liberty Station). Chef Brown will start filming at his pop-up dinners for a potential docuseries that he hopes to pitch to television networks (check out the teaser trailer below).
Chef Brown started his culinary career in Garmisch, Germany, in 1999 at the age of 18 as a dishwasher in a hotel, falling in love with food and the chef-life. After two and half years in Europe, he returned to Los Angeles to attend Le Cordon Blue culinary school. Chef Brown has worked with many great chefs like Jake Rojas of Tallulah on Thame and Marcel Vigneron of Wolf, and inside many great fine dining kitchens from Palm Springs to Los Angeles and San Diego. He was the head chef of Brockton Villa in La Jolla in 2006-2007.
