Andaz San Diego has had a 4,200 square-foot open space at the corner of 6th and F Streets since Katsuya by Starck exited in 2014, but after almost three years of anticipation, a new restaurant finally opened as of this weekend as part of a $4 million renovation of the property. STK is an upscale steakhouse-lounge-nightclub brand (think blaring DJs paired with pricey cocktails, cuts of steak and fresh seafood) from New York City based The One Group Hospitality, with over 20 locations open and in the works all over the world.
STK San Diego offers a large central lounge area furnished with creamy leather banquettes, surrounded by an elevated dining room for more formal dining. Theatrical lights illuminate each table, with large windows giving patrons chances to catch a glimpse of the bustling Gaslamp Quarter. Frequent DJ performances will creates an energetic vibe to keep the house alive during dinner service and beyond.
As the name insinuates, steak is the main attraction at this new downtown restaurants. STK San Diego offers small, medium and large cuts of meat, as well as naturally raised options and market fresh seafood entrees. Aside from steak, signature items include Parmesan Truffle Frie, Lil’ BRGs sliders, Tuna Tartar, Sweet Corn Pudding and a full raw bar. The company will also oversee the hotel's in-room dining services at Rooftop at STK pool bar.
The San Diego STK was originally planned to be a more approachable and affordable offshoot of The One Group's STK concept (called STK Rebel), but that idea was scrapped. It was also announced that longtime local chef J.C. Colón would be manning the kitchen, but the long delay forced him to take a job at downtown's newly minted Hotel Republic, with culinary options managed by The Patio Group. There is no word as to who is Executive Chef of STK at this juncture.
