San Diego's century-old U.S. Grant Hotel is reviving its Prohibition-era cocktail bar. Rendezvous the Wonder Bar, is expected to debut this fall at the historic downtown property, offering a French-themed speakeasy ambiance and classic decor to compliment signature drinks and frequent live music.
Opened by longtime U.S. Grant owner, Baron Long, in 1933 after the end of prohibition, The Rendezvous Wonder Bar served as a downtown San Diego hotspot bar and restaurant until it closed in 1970. The 2018 incarnation will be located in its own area of the hotel overlooking Horton Plaza Park. It will feature a replica neon sign and have French influences in all aspects of its design. Expect communal seating with soft sofas and dim lights, a custom gramophone jukebox, art from local artists and occasional live music performances.
Although the U.S. Grant has hosted annual pop-up reincarnations of Rendezvous over the years, the 108-year-old icon is exicted to bring it back for good. The hotel's food and beverage director Jeff Josenhans and mixologist Cory Alberty have crafted a concise selection of signature cocktails for $10-12, as well as tableside Vieux Carré cart praparations, punchbowls, beer, wine, cider, and even a teased secret menu.
