French tire company Michelin today announced the inaugural selection of Bib Gourmand establishments in the 2019 Michelin Guide California. From tacos to Italian fare, and from bistros to woodfire restaurants, the highly anticipated list features eight San Diego hot spots.
Originally introduced in 1997, the Michelin Bib Gourmand category highlights restaurants that serve high-quality meals which include two courses and a glass of wine or dessert for $40 or less per person. In addition to the exceptional restaurants distinguished by star awards ranging from 1-3 stars, Michelin inspectors take pride in finding hidden gems to complete the selection that are more widely accessible for diners, whatever their budget or craving.
"Our inspectors were very impressed by the diversity of cuisine and culinary trends that they have seen across the Bib Gourmand selection in California, and it’s great to see that many of these restaurants take advantage of the fantastic local produce available throughout the state," said Gwendal Poullennec, international director of the Michelin Guides.
As a trusted source for gastronomy lovers worldwide for more than 120 years, Michelin publishes 32 Guides annually in more than two dozen countries, including four Guides in the United States. The 2019 Michelin Guide California is the most recent global expansion, and this represents the first statewide or regional Guide in the United States. Building on and including the selection launched in San Francisco last year, California now includes 88 new Bib Gourmands, including San Diego restaurants Campfire in Carlsbad, Cucina Sorella in Kensington, Cucina Urbana in Bankers Hill, El Jardin in Liberty Staton, Juniper & Ivy in Little Italy, Kettner Exchange in Little Italy, Lola 55 in San Diego's East Village, and Solare Ristorante in Liberty Station. Also honored with a Bib Gourmand is the Orange County location of HiroNori, which opened a branch in San Diego's Hillcrest community earlier this year.
For nearly a decade, no Southern California restaurant has been featured by the Michelin Guide, but this year will be the first time that the prestigious travel resource will evaluate restaurants across an entire state. Launching in partnership with Visit California, Michelin will publish its inaugural statewide edition for the Golden State with the full list of winners announced at a live Star Revelation event taking place in Huntington Beach on Monday, June 3. The guide will be available in bookstores starting June 6. While a San Francisco Michelin Guide has been published annually since 2007, Michelin has not featured a Los Angeles guide since 2009 and has never spotlighted San Diego. There is no guarantee that Michelin inspectors will award stars to any San Diego restaurants in its inaugural California guide, but many are speculating that Addison in Del Mar may receive San Diego's only star.
