An Authentic Japanese Matcha Cafe Is Coming To San Diego

June 18, 2019

A rapidly expanding chain of authentic Japanese green tea houses serving everything from soft serve ice cream to unique parfaits, Matcha Cafe Maiko will soon open its first San Diego location.

First founded in Honolulu, HI, in 2016, Matcha Cafe Maiko is now a franchise with locations in Tokyo, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Houston, and Virginia, with more than 20 additional stores in development. The first San Diego location will open later this year in the Mercury Village Shopping Center space that last housed MajesTea in Kearny Mesa.

Matcha Cafe Maiko offers a multitude of products made using organic matcha powder imported from Harima Garden, a farm located in Uji, Japan that has been in operation since 1858. All products, including the ice cream, sponge cakes, waffle cones, and even the adzuki bean toppings, are made in-house. The signature dish is the Maiko Special, which resembles a parfait with layers of ingredients like plant-based jelly, Japanese brown sugar syrup, corn flakes, red beans, homemade matcha chiffon cake, mochi balls, and chestnuts, topped with a swirl of matcha soft serve. Other options include matcha drinks and a variety of soft serve flavors available on freshly made, hand-rolled waffle cones. Matcha Cafe Maiko also serve hojicha, which is a spicier kind of tea with a made with roasted green tea that has a smoky taste that’s deeper and nuttier than traditional matcha.

Matcha Cafe Maiko aims to open by month's end at 8072 Clairemont Mesa Boulevard in San Diego's Kearny Mesa area. For more information, visit matchacafe-maiko.com/eng.
