After 20 years in business, Gordon Biersch Brewery & Restaurant in San Diego's Mission Valley will shutter next month, and La Jolla-born modern Mexican chain Puesto is already in line to take over the building.
Founded in Palo Alto in 1988, Gordon Biersch's San Diego location opened in 1999 with an onsite restaurant and brewery helmed by head brewer Doug Hasker, who is considered one of the city's most proficient brewers of German-style lager varieties. Gordon Biersch will close for business after service on July 16. Gordon Biersch will continue to operate its more than 30 restaurants around the United States.
San Diego-born modern Mexican eatery Puesto is all signed up to take over the Gordon Biersch space. With the first location founded in La Jolla in 2012, Puesto is family-owned and operated by brothers, Eric and Alan Adler, and their cousin Isi Lombrozo, all native San Diegans of Mexican descent. The restaurant now has six locations, including a 9,000-square-foot bar & eatery that opened in Silicon Valley last year and a second San Diego location sited at The Headquarters at Seaport Village. The new location, which will include a brewery, is set to open in the fall. Puesto Mission Valley will be serving a menu of signature tacos made with handmade, organic, non-GMO blue corn tortillas and a selection of margaritas, in addition to their own beer. As you know, the Mexican American family behind Puesto is local, which includes cousins Moy and Isidoro Lombrozo and brothers Eric, Alan and Alexander Adler.
"The Puesto team has been doing cervecería collaborations for years now, working primarily with cervecerías in Mexico to create our own San Diego meets Mexico cervezas," said Puesto Co-Owner Eric Adler. "We’ve been looking for a space in San Diego for some time where we could develop our own cerveza program. This new space gives us the opportunity not only to brew, but continue bringing our innovative approach to authentic Mexican flavors to more of our hometown."
Gordon Biersch Brewery & Restaurant is located at 5010 Mission Center Road in San Diego's Mission Valley. For more information, visit gordonbiersch.com and eatpuesto.com.
