San Diego's own Modern Times Beer has just unveiled The Academy of Recreational Sciences, a brand new Santa Barbara vegan restaurant and tasting room. Check it out!
Modern Times Beer began searching for the perfect space in downtown Santa Barbara in 2015 and eventually found the ideal spot on State Street to install a brewpub and restaurant. The Modern Times Acadamy of Recreational Sciences unveiled this week, offering a spacious interior bar and dining room and an expansive rooftop patio, plus over 30 taps of Modern Times beers, cold brew coffee, wine and occasional guest brews and ciders. The restaurant also offers a menu of "boundary-pushing plant-based cuisine" and a visual feast featuring their most mind-bending installation art to date. The space also features a mini-mart that's fully stocked with to-go beer, house-roasted coffee, glassware, and Modern Times merchandise.
The team at San Diego's Modern Times Beer has been a most busy bunch since founder Jacob McKean started the company in Point Loma in 2013. In addition to being California's first employee-owned brewery, the craft brewery has expanded greatly in its short 6 year tenure, including opening a North Park tasting room dubbed the Flavordome, a downtown Los Angeles restaurant and tasting room named The Dankness Dojo, a tasting room and restaurant in Encinitas named 'The Far West Lounge', and a full brewery operation in Portland, Oregon - 'The Belmont Fermentorium'.
Modern Times is also in the process of developing a gigantic beer playground in downtown Anaheim called 'Leisuretown' and the Invigatorium coffee shop in San Diego's East Village in partnership with Consortium Holdings. Modern Times also recently opened up ownership to outside investors via the Wefunder platform (we own a share!). All of this is in addition to operating the company's original brewery and coffee shop in Point Loma, which is in the process of being expanded into neighboring buildings to add a brewery restaurant.
