Bacon Wrapped Hot Dog Specialist Doggos Gus To Revive In Imperial Beach

October 6, 2019

Doggos Gus, which once had a location in San Diego's University Heights, has announced that it will be opening a new brick-and-mortar eatery across from the ocean in Imperial Beach, taking over the space currently occupied by City Tacos' IB Buns concept.

In 2017, Gustavo Tonella took his mobile hot dog stand and installed it within the craft beer-centric Twisted Taps, taking over the food component at the family-friendly bar and kitchen. Offering an array of bacon-wrapped dogs served on steamed bolillo buns, Doggos Gus is also frequently seen at area markets and festivals. Tonella, who started Doggos Gus in 2010, left the Twisted Taps kitchen in early summer 2018 to shift his focus to catering and events.

Tonella will soon take over the quaint space at 805 Seacoast Avenue currently filled by Imperial Beach Buns (and IB Tacos before that) and hopes to open by year's end. In addition to a menu of signature and customizable Tijuana-style bacon-wrapped hotdogs, Doggos Gus’s will also offer other menu items including nachos, fries, Mexican street corn, soft drinks like agua fresca and horchata, and two of the best selling bugers from Imperial Beach Buns. The SanDiegoVille Dog may even make a triumphant return to the menu to celebrate the new location. The new location is also seeking a beer license and will eventually add a menu of micheladas and some drafts from Baja and San Diego.
