Oscar's Mexican Seafood has shuttered its flailing East Village location, the second branch of the once-expanding San Diego mariscos chain to close in the past year.
Known for its menu of seafood tacos, ceviches and tortas, Oscar's has been a San Diego taco destination since the original eatery opened on Turquoise Street in North Pacific Beach in 2011. Owned by Juan Bernardo Montes de Oca, the casual, fast-casual taqueria has since expanded to open a second Pacific Beach location and an outpost in Hillcrest. The restaurant opened an Ocean Beach branch at 5060 Newport Avenue for a short time before the eatery transformed into
Mike's Taco Club, which to this day offers a very similar menu and style as Oscar's. The restaurant also opened an
outpost in Encinitas in early 2017, but that location shuttered last fall. Oscar's has been featured on an episode of Travel Channel's
Bizarre Foods: Delicious Destinations and was named on Yelp's list of
Top 100 Places to Eat in the U.S. in 2016.
Oscar's Mexican Seafood's East Village branch took over the space that last housed Toast Enoteca & Cucina at 927 J Street near Petco Park and
opened in March 2016. The eatery was likely waiting out the close of the 2019 San Diego Padres baseball season before shuttering.
