The 4-year-old La Jolla location of Donovan's Steak & Chophouse has shuttered, leaving the oceanfront 7,800 square foot unit available for a new tenant.
In September 2014, the Brigantine Group's Steakhouse at Azul and the flagship Donovan's Steak & Chophouse near UTC both announced their closures at around the same time. The reality was that after not being able to come to terms with its landlord after a nearly 15 year tenancy, the soon-to-be-displaced Donovan's approached the Brigantine restaurant group, made 'em an offer they couldn't refuse and bought the Azul location at 1250 Prospect Street in La Jolla. Donovan's ceased its operation at the UTC location in January 2015, and the space eventually became an incarnation of Rick Bayless's Red O restaurant.
Well Donovan's has officially ended its run in La Jolla. There is no word on the reason for the sudden and unannounced closure, but the original downtown San Diego restaurant remains in business. There was also a Donovan's branch in Phoenix, but that branch closed last year after 14 years.
