Boomers To Revive As San Diego Family Fun Center Under Original Ownership

August 14, 2020

The parent company behind Boomers filed for bankruptcy earlier this year, resulting in the shut down of three San Diego locations, but the original owners are planning to revive the Kearny Mesa outpost with its original name - San Diego Family Fun Center.

This past spring, Apex Parks Group, which owned 4 Boomers Parks locations in San Diego, announced it was filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. This resulted in the closure of Boomers branches in Kearny Mesa, El Cajon and Vista, although the North County outpost did reopen for a short time.

Before becoming Boomers in 2001, the 5.5-acre site on Clairemont Mesa Boulevard near Interstate 805 in Kearny Mesa branch was the San Diego Family Fun Center, which was opened in 1987 by brothers John & Jim Huish. Now John Huish's sons, Scott and Shane Huish, have taken over the businesses in San Diego and will reopen the Clairemont Mesa Boulevard location with its original name as early as this fall.

"Our family still owned the land that the parks are on so as part of the bankruptcy settlement, the parks came back to our family and we're back restoring it and looking forward to getting it back open again," said owner Shane Huish in an interview with CBS8 San Diego. "We hope to keep building the park and turn it into a state-of-the-art family fun center."

The Huish family will invest millions of dollars to renovate and modernize the Kearny Mesa property. Aiming to open in early fall, the outside activities will be first to unveil including the popular go-karts, bumper boats, batting cages, Bullwinkle's Pizza and two miniature golf courses. The indoor arcade will receive a complete remodel. The Huish family also owns the properties in La Mesa, Vista and El Cajon where additional Boomers locations sat. Both the Boomers in La Mesa and Vista have been essentially demolished, but the family is still deciding what to do with the mostly-intact El Cajon location.

San Diego Family Fun Center is anticipated to open in early fall 2020 at 6999 Clairemont Mesa Boulevard in Kearny Mesa.
