Crab Catcher Family Takes Over Surf Side Deli In San Diego's Point Loma

September 3, 2020

The family behind La Jolla's since-closed Crab Catcher restaurant has taken over Surf Side Deli in Point Loma.

"Let’s everyone welcome to the Surf Side Deli Family Jon and Justin Burwell," read a post on Surf Side Deli's Social Media. "As of September 1st they have taken over Surf Side Deli. The Burwell Boys aren’t new to the restaurant scene. Their father Jerry owned and operated Crab Catcher in La Jolla for over 40 years. Chef Jon for the past 15 years has been the executive chef and Justin in upper management. Combined these two are going to only add to the amazingness that Surf Side Deli has created... ALL sandwiches will stay the same and business as usual. Please stop in today and support these two Point Loma Local Legends."

After operating as Brown Bag Deli for over 40 years, Chef Billy "Butter" Joyce took over the sandwich shop in February 2017 and renamed it Surf Side Deli. Earlier this week, Joyce announced the impending closure of Surf Side and that new owners would be announced soon. Chef Jon Burwell was previously the executive chef at La Jolla's Crab Catcher, which shuttered this past March after four decades in business. Justin Burwell was long the manager of Crab Catcher. Surf Side Deli will continue to offer chef-designed sandwiches like the USS Midway with peppercorn-crusted roast beef, provolone, herb mayo and crispy onions on an artisan baguette; and the Just The Tip with Santa Maria-style tri-tip, barbecue sauce, herb mayo, crispy jalapenos and provolone cheese on a baguette.
