Swami's Cafe Owner Takes Over Former Waypoint Public Space In San Diego's North Park For New Concept

January 24, 2021

The owner of popular San Diego-born healthy breakfast & lunch destination Swami's Cafe is doubling down in North Park and will open a new concept called Nautica within the space that last housed Waypoint Public.

Owner Jaime Osuna opened his first Swami's location on Highway 101 in Encinitas in 2005, offering a breakfast and lunch menu centered around healthier options and dishes made with fresh local ingredients. Osuna has since opened and closed several additional Swami's outposts in San Diego County, including branches still in business in Carlsbad, Encinitas (2), Escondido, Del Sur, La Mesa, North Park, Oceanside, Point Loma, Vista, and most recently, Solana Beach - plus Honey's Bistro & Bakery in Encinitas and a partnership with Cocina de Barrio in Hillcrest. The 5,000 square-foot former Waypoint Public space now occupied by Osuna was previously taken over on a temporary basis by San Diego's Eppig Brewing, but the craft brewery decided not to lease the space permanently.

Nautica will be a new Mexican-inspired lunch and dinner restaurant concept that will open later this year in North Park. Expect a health-focused menu with dishes ranging from seafood entrees and sandwiches to burgers and vegetarian & vegan offerings. The new location will also feature dinner dishes like stuffed chicken breast, fish & chips, seafood cioppino, and an array of pasta and entrees. The new North Park eatery will also have a full bar and offer a selection of craft cocktails, beer and wines. The Swami's Cafe on University Avenue is currently on the market for lease but currently remains open.

Nautica is anticipated to unveil at 3794 30th Street in San Diego's North Park by this summer. For more information, visit swamiscafe.com
