Duke's Old Fashioned Onion Burgers To Bring Oklahoma Delicacy To San Diego

August 24, 2021

Duke's Old Fashioned Onion Burgers will bring Oklahoma-style smashed onion burgers to San Diego when it opens later this year.

From Frank Schulz, a San Diego native who left for 34 years and since returned 6 years ago, Duke's Old Fashioned Onion Burgers is currently in the process of installing within the space that last housed a Starbucks Coffee in La Mesa. The new eatery will offer a menu centered around Oklahoma onion burgers, where thinly-sliced onions are smashed into the patty while cooking on a flat top grill.

Duke's Old Fashioned Onion Burgers will be a fast-casual concept with indoor and outdoor seating. The menu will feature fresh Angus beef patties cooked to order. Patrons will be able to top their burger with a variety of free toppings, including cheese, lettuce , tomatoes, jalapeños and house made pickles. Duke's will also offer a selection of fresh-cut, double-fried French fries, including Spanish fries with onions and jalapeños, bacon cheese fries, steak and blue cheese fries, taco fries, and pesto fries, as well as handmade milkshakes and other soft drinks.

"The concept is more of a compilation of an Oklahoma style onion burger and my love for French fries done differently," explained Duke's Old Fashioned Onion Burgers founder Frank Schulz. "The restaurant is a fun, friendly atmosphere that is all about the guest experience. We only use fresh. The only freezer we have is for our ice cream - nothing else frozen ever. And when possible we make from scratch all our dressings, pickles, even ketchup. We believe in supporting local, eating local and eating fresh. You can tell the difference."

Duke's Old Fashioned Onion Burgers is anticipated to open this September at 5020 Baltimore Drive in San Diego's La Mesa community. Check out the draft menu below and visit Duke's on Facebook & Instagram for more information.
