San Diego's Cohn Restaurant Group is partnering up with a local husband-and-wife restaurant team to open La Cocina Mesa, an upscale taqueria unveiling next year in North County.
In 2019, David Cohn and Corporate Executive Chef Deborah Scott of San Diego's Cohn Restaurant Group teamed up with Carlsbad husband-and-wife restaurateurs Grant & Jenny Gottesman to open Black Rail Kitchen + Bar in the Paseo Real shopping center in Carlsbad. The Gottesman's also operate Tin Leaf Kitchen and Beach Plum Kitchen, both also sited in Carlsbad. The Cohn Group has invested in all three of the Gottesmans’ restaurants.
La Cocina Mesa will be a creative taco shop sited in the former Daphne’s space adjacent to Black Rail. The new restaurant will be a modern taqueria with both indoor and outdoor seating that will serve an eclectic menu of tacos made on housemade tortillas using a variety of meats, seafood and vegetables. The eatery will also offer a curated selection of beer, Micheladas, and wine. La Cocina Mesa isn't Cohn Restaurant Group's first foray into upscale tacos. The group operated the 100% for-charity Tacos Libertad in Hillcrest from 2017 until it shuttered in late 2020.La Cocina Mesa is expected to open in early 2022 at 6981 El Camino Real, Suite 101, in San Diego's North County city of Carlsbad.
