A "Golden Girls"-Inspired Cafe & Bakery Opens In San Diego's South County

October 25, 2021

A celebrity chef & one-time Cake Boss contestant has opened a new bakery & cafe in San Diego's South County, offering a design inspired by The Golden Girls and a menu of custom cakes and desserts.

Jose Barajas has been honing his cake crafting skills at home and area bakeries for the past 15 years, and his baking prowess has been featured on such culinary television programs as TLC's Cake Boss and The Next Great Baker, as well as Food Network's Holiday Gingerbread Showdown. The San Diego native has also worked on the production side for HBO's Baketopia and Netflix’s Sugar Rush. Over the weekend, Barajas unveiled his first brick-and-mortar bakery & cafe Mmm...Cakes on Third Avenue in Chula Vista.

Mmm...Cakes is a 3,200 square-foot bakery, dessert shop and cafe with an Instagram-worthy design featuring neon signs and odes to Barajas's favorite show, The Golden Girls. In addition to offering customizable cakes for any occasion, the eatery offers an ever-changing array of desserts & pastries, muffins, cake by the slice, smoothies, and coffee creations made with indigenous-owned Spirit Mountain Roasting and cold brew from military-veteran-founded Trident Coffee. The eatery soon hopes to expand its menu with the addition of breakfast offerings, sandwiches, salads, comfort food dishes, beer and wine.

Mmm...Cakes is now open at 310 3rd Avenue in San Diego's South County city of Chula Vista. For more information, visit mmmcakessd.com
