After a two year closure and relocating to a new building across the street, San Diego's historic The Red Fox Steakhouse & Piano Bar will finally reopen on next week in North Park.
The Red Fox Steak House began its life around 1560 as a pub in the county of Surrey in Southern England. In 1926, the tavern was dismantled and the interior walls and decorations were shipped to Santa Monica, CA, where the medieval accents were used in the construction of the private beachfront home of actress Marion Davies. When Davies' Ocean House was sold and turned into a hotel in the late 1950s, the Red Fox materials were dismantled and moved into to storage, before heading to its original San Diego location on the ground floor of San Diego's Lafayette Hotel.
John Demos bought the Red Fox Room Restaurant in 1966, and his son, Jim, took over management of the historic restaurant after his father retired. In 2018, it was announced that Red Fox would be required to move in March 2019, but that was delayed and the restaurant finally closed in March 2020 at the beginning of the pandemic.
The Red Fox Room has moved to a complete new building nearly directly across the street from its longtime space on the base of the Lafayette Hotel, which has since been purchased by San Diego restaurant group Consortium Holdings (Born & Raised, Craft & Commerce). The former Red Fox will become a new bar & restaurant from Consortium, which is anticipated to open by year's end.
The new Red Fox Room Restaurant will unveil with a nearly identical design as the original, featuring Bordeaux leather button-tufted booths, stained glass partitions, historic design accents, and a rebuild of the century-old wooden bar. The menu will offer classic steakhouse staples, ranging from appetizers like jumbo shrimp cocktail and crab cakes, a variety of steak cuts, burgers, salads, sides, seafood specials, and desserts. There will also be a full bar with cocktails, beer, and wine.
The Red Fox Room will reopen during the week of March 21 at 2223 El Cajon Boulevard in San Diego's North Park. For more information, visit redfoxsd.com.
