San Juan Capistrano’s 5-year-old Docent Brewing has plans to open a brewpub in San Diego.
In 2017, Joe Wilshire, Brian Hendon and Scott Cortellessa opened San Juan Capistrano's first brewery Docent Brewing, offering a public house vibe with a menu of craft beers and American comfort food dishes. Brewer Bryan Giesen has produced a lineup of around a dozen signature beers, including award-winners Super Tonic oatmeal coffee stout and Double Nickels pale ale.
"After a long search for another Docent venue both North and South of us, we found a special space in another Southern California beach community that felt very familiar to us," explained Docent Brewing co-founder and head brewery Bryan Giesen. "The Carlsbad vibe is very much aligned with what we have been fortunate to watch grow at our brewery/tasting room in San Juan Capistrano. We are absolutely psyched to share our food and beer in a beautiful and very unique setting in hopes to create another true public house for friends old and new."
Docent Brewing ownership has purchased a 950 square-foot, single-family home on State Street in Carlsbad and will build a new brewpub, affectionately dubbed "The Cottage". Expect a homey design with backyard patio seating, an onsite brewery component and a kitchen serving food inspired by fermentation. The menu will include sandwiches, salads, burgers, and bowls along with 16 taps of Docent beer, kombucha, wine and other non-alcoholic creations.
Docent Brewing is anticipated to open in 2023 at 3060 State Street in San Diego's North County city of Carlsbad. For more information, visit docentbrewing.com and check out the food menu below.
