San Diego-produced sake will be paired with Hawaiian cuisine & shark-themed craft beer at a new tasting room partnership opening later this year in Miramar.
A new local craft brewery dubbed Niuhi Brewing is in the process of installing within the space that last housed Latchkey Brewing within the historic Mission Brewery Plaza in San Diego's Middletown area off the I-5 freeway. Founded by hospitality industry vet & Hawaiian native Rhett Terrebonne, Niuhi will brew a range of beers produced by head brewer Josh Hembree, who is the co-founder of San Diego's only sake producer, 8-year-old Setting Sun Sake Brewing Company. From Niuhi, which means "man-eating shark" in the native Hawaiian language, expect a lineup of one-off and signature shark-themed beers, including the Tiger Shark Hazy IPA, Nurse Shark Brown Ale, and Bull Shark American IPA.
With the friendship between Terrebonne and Hembree comes another project afoot. The duo will continue their partnership with the installation of a joint sake & craft beer tasting room with an onsite Hawaiian restaurant at Setting Sun's location in the Miralani Makers' District in San Diego's beer-soaked Miramar neighborhood.
Terrebone will build a tasting room component for Niuhi Brewing inside Setting Sun and add an onsite kitchen for his sister-project Ono Kine Grindz, which will serve a menu of Hawaiian and Asian fusion dishes. Terrebone is a culinary school graduate who has honed his craft cooking at restaurants around Maui and around Hawaii. Based on the success of their first joint project, Terrebone & Hembree plan on opening a series of shipping-container-built bars & eateries around San Diego and Southern California.
The combined Setting Sun Sake, Niuhi Brewing & Ono Kind Grindz tasting room is expected to be completed at some point next year at 8680 Miralani Drive, Unit #12, in San Diego's Miramar community.
