A member of the family behind South County's 15-year-old birria destination Ed Fernandez Restaurant, which was recently named #1 taco in the United States, has unveiled a new taco shop. La Central by Miguel Fernandez Birrieria & Menuderia is now open in San Diego.
After testing the water with a food truck, brothers Miguel Angel and Jorge Fernandez founded Tijuana-style birria eatery Ed Fernandez Restaurant in 2006 in the Nestor community of South San Diego. The restaurant has since doubled in size and always has hungry patrons lining up for up to 2 hours each morning to get a taste of the authentic birria de res, a chile-based stewed meat made with beef (traditionally goat) that is slow-simmered overnight. Earlier this year, online crowdsourced-reviews aggregator Yelp published a list the Top 100 Taco Spots in America and named Ed Fernandez Restaurant Birrieria as the premier spot in the entire country.
Miguel Angel Fernandez has branched off and along with new business partner Oscar Armenta has teamed up to take over a space a stone's throw from Ed Fernandez Restaurant to open La Central by Miguel Fernandez Birrieria & Menuderia. Currently a fast-casual eatery, eventually they will open a larger restaurant in the neighboring building. Expect a Chipotle style eatery that serves a menu of tacos, burritos, Mexican bowls, tortas and tostadas. The restaurant will be open for lunch & dinner and also serve a variety of Mexican soft drinks.
La Central by Miguel Fernandez Birrieria & Menuderia is now open at 1290 Hollister Street in the Otay Nestor neighborhood of San Diego's South Bay.
