Manchester United To Play Rob McElhenney & Ryan Reynolds’ Wrexham Football Club In San Diego This July

March 27, 2023

Premier UK football club Manchester United will return to the United States for the first time in five years to play the third oldest club in the world and fan favorites, Wrexham AFC, a team owned by actors Rob McElhenney & Ryan Reynolds, in San Diego this July.

This San Diego meetup is the first match of Manchester United’s 2023 Summer Tour to be announced after United revealed last week that Erik ten Hag and his squad will travel to the U.S. in preparation for the 2023/24 season. The team drawn will take on Wrexham AFC on July 25 at Snapdragon Stadium as part of a week-long training camp in San Diego.

For Wrexham, this will be the first time in the club’s history that they will travel to the United States, an exciting next step for a team that was brought to prominence in the United States following the purchase of the club by It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia star Rob McElhenney and Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds in 2020. The purchase was documented on the television series called Welcome to Wrexham. The last time these two clubs faced off in a competitive fixture was in the FA Cup in 1995, where Manchester United won 5-2 at Old Trafford.

"This will be the first time the team has visited San Diego, and we are looking forward to playing in front of our passionate US fans at the Snapdragon stadium," commented Manchester United Football Director John Murtough. "Pre-season tours are always a great opportunity to give opportunities for our most promising young Academy players to gain valuable experience in the first team environment, and this match against Wrexham AFC is a great example of that."

Tickets to the match will be available online for pre-sale starting at noon on Monday, March 27, with a full general public sale beginning at 8am on Wednesday, March 29.
