After more than two decades in business, Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar will soon shutter its location in the University City area of La Jolla.
Founded in 1998 in Newport Beach, CA by Paul Fleming and Bill Allen, Fleming's Prime Steakhouse now has more than 60 locations around the country, including two branches in San Diego County. The American steakhouse restaurant chain has long been owned and operated by Bloomin' Brands, the Tampa, FL-based parent company behind Outback Steakhouse, Bonefish Grill and Carrabba's Italian Grill.
Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar's La Jolla location opened in late 1999, followed by a branch on 4th and K in downtown San Diego. The La Jolla location could not secure a lease with the property's new owners and will permanently close after end of service this Sunday, June 25."Our lease is expiring," wrote a representative of Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar. "Some team members will have the opportunity to another location and others will receive a severance package. We appreciate the community’s support the past 23 years and hope guests will join us at our San Diego restaurant."
Over the course of the past two years, Biotech-focused IQHQ has purchased nearly the entire Aventine complex in San Diego's UTC neighborhood. The Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine was purchased for $216.3 million, the Aventine Atrium building for $11 million, and the 11-story Aventine Office Building including restaurants for $205 million. While there has been no announcement by IQHQ regarding re-development plans for the property, the company's website features a future life science project called Aventine on University Center Lane, adjacent to the Hyatt Regency. This project is the reason for Fleming's La Jolla closure.
