Plan 9 Alehouse Ends Decade-Long Run In San Diego's North County

June 9, 2023

After nearly 10 years in business, Plan 9 Alehouse has shuttered its brewpub and record store in San Diego's North County.

After raising over $40,000 on Kickstarter, Aaron Calles founded Plan 9 Alehouse in San Diego's North County city of Escondido in 2013. During the pandemic, the combined craft brewery and tasting room began selling vinyl records and added some video games to appeal to customers. Longtime craft brewer Chris Riley joined Plan 9 as head brewer in summer 2019 after working at Stone Brewing for several years.

This week, patrons noticed that Plan 9 had emptied its space at 155 East Grand Avenue in downtown Escondido. A sign hanging on the door reads: "Sorry we're DEAD". There has been no announcement of the closure on Plan 9's website or social media. It is believe the property was recently sold to a new owner who wanted to raise the rent. There is no word on whether Plan 9 will be reviving in a new location.
