Following a $31 million renovation, Hotel Solamar in downtown San Diego has been reborn as California's first urban Margaritaville Resort. This transformation also introduces a trio of new dining establishments.
Located in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter, just blocks from Petco Park and the San Diego Convention Center, Margaritaville Hotel San Diego Gaslamp Quarter features 235 newly upgraded rooms featuring updates like white shiplap walls and rattan fixtures. The property offers 6,000 square-feet of indoor meeting space, as well as signature Margaritaville food and beverage concepts that replaced the properties previous offerings - the longtime base floor signature JSix restaurant and the Upper East rooftop pool bar.
The Margaritaville Hotel San Diego Gaslamp Quarter features spaces reflecting the Margaritaville brand's relaxed state of mind, which is reflective of Jimmy Buffett's music. The former Jsix space has become a Landshark Bar & Grill, while the 7,000 square-foot poolside Upper East bar is now a branch of 5 O'Clock Somewhere Bar. Both concepts offer a casual, beachy vibe with a focus on American beach fare and blended cocktails. The lobby also houses a quaint Margaritaville Coffee Shop, which sells an array of coffee, espresso, tea, soft drinks and grab-and-go bites.
Pebblebrook Hotel Trust and Margaritaville Enterprises acquired Hotel Solamar San Diego from Kimpton Hotels in 2018 and assisted with the transition along with the resort's current management company Davidson Hotels & Resorts. Davidson Hotels & Resorts continued to operate the property as Hotel Solamar throughout the renovation and rebranding program.
San Diego's Paradise Point Resort & Spa was previously scheduled to be rebranded into the first West Coast location of the Jimmy Buffett-themed Margaritaville Island Resort, but that property has been plagued by permitting issues since it was announced in 2019. If the transition of Paradise Point Resort into a Margaritaville does eventually occur, which remains unclear, it will be at least a year or more down the road. That project's future is now in the hands of the California Coastal Commission.
Since 1977, Margaritaville has been a global lifestyle brand inspired by the lyrics and lifestyle of singer, songwriter and best-selling author Jimmy Buffett, whose songs evoke a passion for tropical escape and relaxation. Margaritaville features 23 lodging locations with more than 20 additional projects in the pipeline, two gaming properties and over 60 food and beverage venues including signature concepts such as Margaritaville Restaurant, award-winning JWB Prime Steak and Seafood, 5 o’Clock Somewhere Bar & Grill and LandShark Bar & Grill.
The new Margaritaville Hotel San Diego Gaslamp Quarter, Landshark Bar & Grill, Margaritaville Coffee Shop and 5 O'Clock Somewhere Pool Bar are all now open at 435 Sixth Avenue in downtown San Diego's East Village. For more information, visit margaritavilleresorts.com/margaritaville-hotel-san-diego.
