San Diego's Pannikin Coffee & Tea Opening New Location In North County

August 24, 2023

San Diego's more than 50 year-old Pannikin Coffee & Tea is opening a new cafe in a historic building in North County.

Pannikin Coffee and Tea first opened in 1968 in one of the cottages at the Green Dragon Artist Colony above La Jolla Cove, where owner Bob SinClair started roasting coffee from a peanut roaster and blending teas to sell wholesale from his home. Bob and his wife Gaye eventually opened seven Pannikin locations throughout San Diego, including in downtown, Point Loma, Encinitas, Del Mar, and two downtown locations. Pannikin now operates a cafe in the Leucadia area of Encinitas, as well as two outlets inside San Diego International Airport.

In 1971 the original Pannikin Cafe relocated to what was once a home on Girard Avenue in downtown La Jolla. In 2007, Pannikin La Jolla was purchased by longtime employee Amanda Morrow, who currently operates the cafe with partners Gloria Serna and Dan Grunow. The original La Jolla branch of Pannikin Coffee shuttered last year after ownership was unable to come to terms on a new lease agreement. Previous owners reopened nearby as a new coffee shop & eatery named The Flower Pot Cafe & Bakery.

A new branch of Pannikin Coffee & Tea will open in the 1880s-era building that last housed The Bunker House Cafe in San Diego's North County city of Oceanside. Like other branches, expect a menu of coffee drinks, teas, sandwiches, pastries, toasts and more.

Pannikin Cafe is expected to open by year's end at 322 North Cleveland Street, Suite B, in Oceanside. For more information, visit pannikincoffeeandtea.com.
