September 20, 2023After more than three years operating Farmer & The Seahorse, Common Stock Hospitality will soon hand off operations to Whisknladle Hospitality Group.
In 2020 amidst the pandemic, Anderson Clark & Brian Douglass of Common Stock in Hillcrest took over operations of Farmer & The Seahorse restaurant. Farmer & The Seahorse was originally operated by San Diego celebrity chef Brian Malarkey, who was originally tasked with overseeing the culinary operations at three eateries located on Alexandria Real Estate Equities tech center campuses in La Jolla, including two outposts of Green Acre.
In departing their management role of Farmer & The Seahorse, Common Stock Hospitality owners will shift their focus back to their wholly owned concepts, Common Stock in Hillcrest and Banker's Hill's brand new Books & Records bar and restaurant. The Common Stock team, under their new consulting entity, Back Forty Hospitality, is also working on a food and service concept for a new restaurant and sports book opening as part of the incoming $3.7 billion location of Fontainebleau Las Vegas.
"We're honored to have had the opportunity to operate Farmer & The Seahorse in partnership with Alexandria Real Estate for the past three years," said Common Stock co-founder Brian Douglass. "It has been an invaluable experience and we cherish the incredible friendships we've built along the way. Our core mission since the day we started our group has been to bring positive change to neighborhoods and improve the lives of people we work with, and serve. While we are very fortunate to have been a part of the Alexandria Real Estate community, this transition allows us to return 100% of our focus to our mission. We are excited to welcome Arturo Kassel and the Whisknladle team. They are wonderful operators and we can't wait to see how they make Farmer & The Seahorse their own."
Common Stock Hospitality will transition away from Farmer & The Seahorse as of December 1 and the restaurant operations will be in the hands of La Jolla-based Whisknladle Hospitality. Owner Arturo Kassel and Chef/Partner Ryan Johnston opened Whisknladle restaurant in La Jolla in 2008 but the restaurant shuttered in 2020 and is now Puesto's Marisi Italian restaurant. Whisknladle also founded three Prepkitchen restaurants (which were sold off in late 2017 and subsequently shuttered in early 2020), Catania Coastal Italian in La Jolla, the 7,000 square-foot Gravity Heights brewery restaurant in Mission Valley, and the 10,000 square-foot Park Commons food hall in Sorrento Valley. Whisknladle Hospitality also maintains its ongoing involvement in Milagro Winery in Ramona, where they once operated an onsite food truck. The company is also working on a new location of Gravity Heights to open next year in Mission Valley.
