Popular Los Angeles-based fast-casual salad restaurant chain Sweetgreen is planning to open a location in downtown San Diego.
The original Sweetgreen restaurant was founded in Washington DC in 2007 by founders Nicolas Jammet, Nathaniel Ru and Jonathan Newman, who all had just graduated from Georgetown University business school a few months earlier. Now headquartered in Culver City, CA, Sweetgreen has more than 150 locations around the country.
The first San Diego location of Sweetgreen opened early last year in a 2,500 square-foot space within the 123,000 square-foot Beacon La Costa shopping center in Carlsbad, formerly La Costa Towne Center. The second San Diego Sweetgreen location opened in a 2,400-square-foot space within Del Mar Highlands Town Center. There are also branches of Sweetgreen in 4S Commons Town Center in 4S Ranch and within Westfield UTC mall in La Jolla.
The next location of Sweetgreen will open later next year in the redeveloped space fronting the incoming The Campus at Horton within Horton Plaza Park. The new Sweetgreen will a part of the long-planned Horton Plaza Food Hall, which will house 6-9 restaurant kiosks, including three standalone, and a huge outdoor dining patio on a one-acre revamped section of Horton Plaza Park. Like other branches, expect a seasonally-changing menu with a variety of customizable salads, warm bowls, sides, and shareable plates.
The fifth San Diego Sweetgreen aims to open at some point next year at 900 Fourth Avenue in downtown San Diego. For more information, visit sweetgreen.com.
