San Diego Brewing Company Under New Ownership After 30 Years In Business

October 25, 2023

The 30-year-old San Diego Brewing Company has been purchased by an ownership team that includes O'Brien's Pub Chef Tyson Blake and co-owners of San Diego's 85-year-old Chicken Pie Shop.

Husband-and-wife Chef Tyson & Kristina Blake met in 2003 while both were employees at San Diego Brewing Company, so it's a full circle moment that they are both now owners of the Mission Valley-based craft brewery. The couple now has ownership interests in several San Diego bars and restaurants, including O’Brien’s Pub in Kearny Mesa, West Coast Smoke & Tap House in La Mesa, The Pub at Lake Cuyamaca near Julian, and wholesale beer distributor Keg Seeker.

The Blakes partnered with San Diego Chicken Pie Shop co-owners Bob and Lisa Townsend to purchase San Diego Brewing from founders Lee Doxtader and Scott Stamp, who opened the brewpub near what was then Qualcomm Stadium in Mission Valley in 1993. New ownership will operate the business as-is through the New Year and early 2024, then temporarily close to perform interior renovations and add an exterior patio. Once reopened around mid-2024, San Diego Brewing will offer a revitalized menu and modernized beer selections with the help of longtime head brewer Matt Navarre.

San Diego Brewing is also expected to apply for a new liquor license in order to offer batched craft cocktails and will roll out additional hard beverages under new brand San Diego Hard Seltzer Company. As far as food, expect an array of tavern-oriented dishes, sandwiches, burgers, and pizzas, as well as the return of Blake's monthly beer pairing dinner series.

San Diego Brewing Company is sited at 10450 Friars Road in Mission Valley. For more information, visit sandiegobrewing.com
