Founded by Steve Ells in Denver, CO, in 1993, Chipotle expanded to 16 restaurants around Colorado before the McDonald's Corporation became a major investor in 1998. Now with over 4,000 company-owned locations around the globe, including 15 in San Diego County, Chipotle had nearly $9 billion in revenue in 2022 and is on track to surpass it this year.
Chipotle has taken over the space previously occupied by a Carl’s Jr. within the San Carlos Village Shopping Mall for its first location in San Diego's Lake Murray neighborhood. The location will feature a "Chipotlane" drive-thru window and offer a menu of customizable burritos, bowls, tacos, salads, and quesadillas. The new location will also have a beer and wine license.
The newest San Diego Chipotle Mexican Grill is expected to open in spring 2024 at 8856 Navajo Road in Lake Murray. For more information, visit chipotle.com.
