San Diego's more than 50 year-old Pannikin Coffee & Tea has opened a new location in Carlsbad.
Pannikin Coffee and Tea first opened in 1968 in one of the cottages at the Green Dragon Artist Colony above La Jolla Cove, where owner Bob SinClair started roasting coffee from a peanut roaster and blending teas to sell wholesale from his home. Bob and his wife Gaye eventually opened seven Pannikin locations throughout San Diego, including in downtown, Point Loma, Encinitas, Del Mar, and two downtown locations. Pannikin now operates a cafe in the Leucadia area of Encinitas, two outlets inside San Diego International Airport, and is building a new branch in the 1880s-era building that last housed The Bunker House Cafe in San Diego's North County city of Oceanside.
In 1971 the original Pannikin Cafe relocated to what was once a home on Girard Avenue in downtown La Jolla. The original La Jolla branch of Pannikin Coffee shuttered last year after ownership was unable to come to terms on a new lease agreement. Previous owners reopened nearby as a new coffee shop & eatery named The Flower Pot Cafe & Bakery.
Dubbed Pannikin Fly By, the new cafe is sited next door to Prager Brothers Bakery in Carlsbad's Gateway Center. Like other branches, expect a menu of coffee drinks, teas, sandwiches, pastries, acai bowls, empanadas and more, as well as a merchandise section.
Pannikin Fly By is now open 5611 Palmer Way, Unit B, in Carlsbad. For more information, visit pannikincoffeeandtea.com and check out the menu below.
