After 30 years in the same space, The Living Room Coffeehouse will soon relocate in La Jolla.
Sam Azzu opened the first The Living Room Café in San Diego's College Area on Thanksgiving Day in 1991, followed by The Living Room Café of La Jolla in 1993. There is also a location of The Living Room in Old Town and another in the Rancho San Diego area of El Cajon.
"We have some Sad News and some Good News regarding The Living Room La Jolla," posted the company on its social media channels. "This little cafe started 30 years ago and was an instant success, it became San Diego's community and cultural melting pot, a place that brought together people from different parts of the world every night. The Living Room is a place where some of us met our best friends, had our first date, or met our significant other."
The Living Room has announced it will close its longtime Prospect Street cafe and restaurant as of December 25 and reopen on January 1 two block north on the base floor of the Manchester Financial Building in the space that last housed Covo La Jolla. The 10,000 square-foot space will be a substantial upgrade for The Living Room. According to reports, the landlord at the original unit wanted The Living Room out so that the building could be redeveloped.
"I fought hard over the last 12 years to keep this San Diego Landmark at its current location, however our current landlords, an investment group out of LA had different plans for this building," continued the announcement. "Accepting this fate would be the easy way out, however I couldn’t just walk away from La Jolla, the people we love, and some of our staff that has been committed to The Living Room for over the last two decades."
The Living Room will reopen on January 1, 2024 at 1205 Prospect Street in the heart of San Diego's La Jolla. For more information, visit livingroomcafe.com.
