Decades-Old Angelo's Burgers Shuttering Another North County San Diego Location

December 12, 2023

North County San Diego's iconic Angelo's Burgers is closing another location, leaving the 45-year-old California diner concept with only two remaining restaurants.

Tony Regakis arrived in the United States from Greece in 1969, facing a stark reality of having "no money" and even "no shoes." Following close to ten years laboring in the restaurant scene in Los Angeles, he embarked on his entrepreneurial journey by launching his inaugural burger joint in Oceanside in 1978. However, naming it after a cousin was a decision influenced by the presence of two existing restaurants in the city already bearing the name "Tony's".

Angelo's Burgers grew to four locations at its prime. Operated over the years by Regakis, his wife, Debbie, and their five children, the family-run business shuttered its Encinitas location in early 2021 during the pandemic and that space is now Buona Forchetta hospitality group's Italian-style GP Diner. There will still be two branches of Angelo's Burgers sited in Oceanside after the most central branch closes after end of service today.

The closure of the central Oceanside branch of Angelo's Burgers paves the way for Better Buzz Coffee Roasters to take over the building. Founded by then-college students Tim Langdon and Stephanie Garden as a coffee cart in 2002, Better Buzz Coffee Roasters opened its first cafe location at on Garnet Avenue in Pacific Beach in 2007. The company has substantially grown over the past 16 years and now has 19 locations. Like other area locations, the new Better Buzz will serve a menu of coffee and espresso drinks, including drip coffee and cold brews, as well as a lineup of organic smoothies and an expanded breakfast and lunch food menu with avocado toast, grilled sandwiches, paninis, muffins, cookies, bagels and a variety of acai bowls.

Angelo's Burgers will close following today's service at 1050 South Coast Highway in San Diego's North County city of Oceanside. For more information, visit angelosburgers.com.
