This past September, Chef Steve Brown abandoned his Swagyu location in San Diego's Pacific Beach, but he will soon return to the coastal neighborhood to open a new Swagyu Burger on Garnet Avenue.
Chef Steve Brown opened his first Swagyu Chop Shop in summer 2020 at 1002 Palm Avenue in Imperial Beach, with a second location launched in Poway soon after. In 2021, Brown took over the 19-year-old Isabel's Cantina in Pacific Beach for a branch of his butcher shop and steakhouse Swagyu Burger & Chop Shop. Other branches of Swagyu were in the works for the space previously occupied by Schooner Station Pizzeria & Sports Pub in Encinitas and as part of the currently under-construction Freeman Collective in South Oceanside, but both those project were cancelled. The Oceanside space will now become the first brick-and-mortar location of Tanner's Prime Burgers.
Earlier this summer, Swagyu's Pacific Beach location shuttered and Brown said at the time it was going to be repurposed to become a new concept dubbed Beach Bum Burger Bar. Brown eventually decided to relinquish the Pacific Beach space on Felspar Street. He thereafter opened a branch of Swagyu Burger within a CloudKitchens space at 1750 Newport Boulevard in Costa Mesa, CA. There is also a branch located at 14149 Twin Peaks Road in San Diego's Poway neighborhood. The Swagyu Imperial Beach location, which Brown previously stated would be his flagship branch moving forward, has been closed since early August and is not reopening.

Swagyu Burgers has now taken over the quaint space previously occupied by Lewis'itos and Calozzi's Cheesesteaks before that. The incoming, fast-casual restaurant will serve a menu of Chef Brown's famed Wagyu smash burgers, as well as rotating specials. In addition to the incoming PB location, Chef Brown also claims he is opening new Swagyu Burger outposts in Westfield UTC mall food court, within Steel Craft Garden Grove and in a Cloud Kitchen in Century City.
Swagyu Burgers is anticipated to open in early 2024 at 1146 Garnet Avenue, Unit A, in San Diego's Pacific Beach. For more information, visit swagyuburger.com.
