Will McDonald's Open A Location Of Its New CosMc's Restaurant Concept In San Diego?

December 11, 2023

Fast-food behemoth McDonald's recently unveiled a new, small-format beverage-led concept named CosMc’s, but will a location open in San Diego?

Named after a quirky McDonald's character from the 1980s that was a hybrid of an alien, robot, and surfer, CosMc's is being looked at as McDonald's answer to Starbucks. Inspired by nostalgia and powered by a menu of morning-focused foods and beverages, CosMc’s menu will offer a range of specialty lemonades and teas, blended beverages and cold coffee.

As far as drinks, think churro frappe, s’mores cold brew, and a chai frappe burst. On the food front, expect several McDonald's breakfast sandwiches, as well as new additions like the Spicy Queso Sandwich, Savory Hash Brown Bites, Pretzel Bites served with dipping sauces, a Blueberry Lemon Cookie Sundae and Caramel Fudge Brownies, to name a few.

As part of a limited test, the first CosMc’s location opened in Bolingbrook, Illinois, last Friday, with approximately 10 additional CosMc’s pilot locations across the Dallas-Fort Worth and San Antonio metro areas set to open by the end of 2024.

Despite reaching out to both McDonald's corporate office and local franchisees, there's currently no confirmed timeline for a CosMc’s branch in San Diego, although the location on Rosecrans is being remodeled and the exterior looks very similar to a CosMc's. While the lack of confirmation doesn't rule out the possibility of one appearing in the near future, CosMc's remains in the experimental phase. It does seem a bit surprising that a restaurant sporting a mascot like a robot-surfer-alien wouldn’t land in San Diego – the perfect match, right?
San Diego is no stranger to McDonald's test concepts. A downsized version of the fast food concept, named McSnack, operated on Prospect Street in the heart of La Jolla starting in 1984. The controversial eatery, which was only the second version of the concept at the time of opening, was only 800 square-feet with no onsite seating and a reduced menu.
