Named after the city in Northern New Jersey where Frank Sinatra was born and raised, Hoboken Pizza & Beer Joint was founded by NJ-native Anthony Kruk in 2003. The restaurant served an East Coast-style pizzeria menu featuring pizza by the slice and whole pie, calzones, stromboli, sandwiches, pasta and other appetizers. In spring 2020 at the height of the pandemic, Hoboken Pizza made headlines after its owner stripped all the signed dollar bills that once completely lined the restaurant's walls and donated the money to a fund being raised to buy food from local restaurants for healthcare workers.
"Over the years, Hoboken Pizza and Beer Joint has been more than just a pizzeria; it has been a gathering place, a hub for celebrations, and a part of the fabric of this wonderful community," continued the closing announcment. "However, several external factors, including the unprecedented challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, escalating food prices, the rise in the minimum wage, and the soaring costs of retail rent and operations, have placed an insurmountable burden on our ability to sustain the business."
After Hoboken Pizza's closure, the space will be taken over by Thank You San Diego, a newly formed restaurant group from Mark Slattery, Paul Lyones, Steve Pure and Seth Dominque, which also owns Riptides Bar & Grill in Pacific Beach. New ownership plans to quickly reactivate the restaurant space and reopen it as Rizers Pizza with many of the same staff members, menu items and recipes.
Hoboken Pizza will shutter on Sunday, January 28, at midnight. The restaurant is located at 1459 Garnet Avenue in San Diego's Pacific Beach. For more information, visit hobokenpizza.com.
