Japan's Michelin-Recognized Baikohken Restaurant Opening San Diego Location

January 4, 2024

A Michelin-recognized Japanese restaurant with more than 50 years in business, Baikohken will soon open its first mainland U.S. location in San Diego.

Baikohken Ramen was founded in 1969 in Asahikawa, Hokkaido, where it remains a must-visit tourist attraction to this day. Today, the Japanese ramen chain has 12 location with branches sited in Japan, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Vietnam and Honolulu, HI. During the course of its more than half-century in operation, Baikohken Ramen has received several honors, including being awarded the grand prize at the Asahikawa Ramen competition and being included in the Michelin Guide Hokkaido in 2012 and 2017.
Baikoken's first California restaurant will open later this year in the space that last housed a branch of Menya Ultra in San Diego's Hillcrest neighborhood. The restaurant's most popular ramen is their "W soup", with a broth cooked with beef, chicken, dried sardines and kelp to add more flavor and specially made medium-thin curly noodles. Baikoken's menu will also include shoyu, shio, miso and vegetable ramen soup, as well as rice dishes and sides like fried dumplings, Hokkaido-style deep-fried chicken, and potato croquettes.

Baikoken Ramen is anticipated to open in February at 690 University Avenue in San Diego's Hillcrest. For more information, visit baikohken.com and check out the sample menu below.
