With nearly four decades of combined pizza experience, Joseph Ghafori Wehrly and Kevin Gist started TNT Pizza as a weekly pop-up in April 2020. The duo would take pre-orders for their rotating pizza styles, frequently selling out. In late 2021, TNT Pizza, which stands for "thick and thin pizza", opened its first brick-and-mortar location in the space that previously housed Alpha Pizza in downtown San Diego's East Village. The restaurant offers a variety of different styles of pizza, including sourdough Detroit and bar style pizzas by the slice and whole pie, as well as takes on New York and grandma style, including vegan varieties.
The TNT Pizza team has signed a lease with longtime Chula Vista developer Alan Cassell to take over the 2,500 square-foot unit previously occupied by Attitude Brewing Company on Third Avenue in the heart of Chula Vista. Opening later this year, the new TNT Pizza will take stylistic cues from the nostalgic mom n' pop slice shops of 1970s NYC. Expect a menu regional pizzas and rotating specials, as well as salads, stromboli, deep fried calzones, some desserts, an ample array of vegan and gluten free options, and beer & wine.
After the Chula Vista store opens, the TNT crew will look to open a branch in North Park. They are planning to join forces with Cow By Bear's Jill Solomon and Jessica O’Sheacoming to launch a new collaborative outdoor space on 30th Street later this year.
TNT Pizza is expected to open at some point this spring at 221 Third Avenue in San Diego's South Bay city of Chula Vista. For more information, follow TNT Pizza on Instagram.
