North County San Diego's 57-Year-Old Tip Top Meats European Grocery & Restaurant Set To Close Later This Year

June 7, 2024

After 57-years in business in the same building, North County San Diego's Tip Top Meats European grocery and restaurant is closing its doors later this year.

After originally opening a butcher shop in Glendale, CA, German immigrant Joachim "Big John" Haedrich relocated to San Diego's North County community of Carlsbad and opened Tip Top Meats in 1967. Over the years, the butcher shop has grown to house a full grocery component, seafood counter, European wine shop, restaurant, and catering service. The business once had an adjacent fish market called Top Choice Fish, but it closed in late 2021.
Big John passed away in January 2023 at the age of 94 and his adult children have been running Tip Top Meats ever since. We've received word the European market will close at the end of September following nearly seven decades in business. It is rumored the store's ownership is looking to reopen in another location after losing their lease, but that has not been confirmed. We reached out to Tip Top Meats by email to get a comment but did not receive a response by the time of publishing.

Tip Top Meats intends to continue to operate under normal hours at 6118 Paseo Del Norte in San Diego's North County community of Carlsbad through September 30, 2024. For more information, visit tiptopmeats.com.
