San Diego's Verant Group of bars & restaurants (Barleymash, Maverick's Beach Club) is planning a new location of its morning-focused Spill The Beans Coffee & Bagels concept to open in the former Our Green Affair space in Pacific Beach.
The Verant Group opened the first Spill The Beans coffee house in summer 2017 as an adjacent cafe to compliment its The Smoking Gun bar and restaurant in downtown San Diego. A second location opened in the Lighthouse District of Seaport Village in late 2020 with a third unveiled late last year in Mission Valley. Another branch of the cafe concept is in the works for the former Union Bank drive through ATM building location on the corner of Newport Avenue & Sunset Cliffs in Ocean Beach.
Although a Pacific Beach branch of Spill The Beans was previously being planned for the 1,212 square-foot space that last housed Mama Mia's Italian restaurant on Balboa Avenue, the company has since pivoted. A new Spill The Beans is now in the planning stages for the unit that last occupied by Our Green Affair on the base floor of the historic Dunaway Building on Garnet Avenue in the heart of Pacific Beach.
Spill The Beans offers a menu centered around freshly made "California-style" bagels in non-traditional flavors and playful coffee creations from San Diego's Dark Horse Coffee Roasters. In addition to a creative variety of house made bagels & cream cheeses, the eatery also offers, coffee & tea drinks, taro lattes, kombucha & other soft drinks, chia bowls, pastries, infused compound butters and a menu of breakfast sandwiches.
Eric Lingenfelder, Mark Cirillo and Joe Vaught co-founded San Diego-based Verant Group in 2003. The bar and restaurant collective now operates a multitude of locations around San Diego, including Barleymash, Sandbar, The Smoking Gun, Tavern at the Beach, Spill The Beans Coffee + Bagel, Mavericks Beach Club, and the recently unveiled Hasta Mañana Cantina. In 2021, Joe Vaught branched out and purchased the 3,854 square-foot building that houses several condos and was previously occupied by The Patio on Lamont restaurant in Pacific Beach for the opening of a new location of Bay Park's Luce Bar & Kitchen, but that space remains untouched and word on the street is the plan for a second Luce is no more.
