Terra American Bistro Closing To Public After Nearly Three Decades Serving San Diego

June 13, 2024

After nearly three decades of serving San Diego, Terra American Bistro is closing to the public and will transition to a catering service.

After graduating from University of California San Diego, Jeff Rossman opened Terra American Bistro in San Diego's Hillcrest community in 1997 before relocating to the College Area near San Diego State University in 2011. Rossman’s revolving menu of modern American comfort food was at the forefront of the now-ubiquitous farm-to-table movement in San Diego.

"It is with both sadness and excitement that we announce a new chapter in the life of Terra American Bistro," wrote Chef Jeff Rossman in the announcement on Terra American Bistro's Facebook Page. "After over 26 wonderful years of serving our beloved San Diego community with delectable dishes and warm hospitality, we have made the decision to transition from our traditional restaurant model to focus on catering and takeout services. While this decision was not made lightly, we believe it will allow us to better serve you, our valued patrons, in new and exciting ways."

Although Terra is closing for onsite dining, Chef Rossman intends to continue cooking in a catering capacity, including offering intimate dinner party service and large corporate events. The restaurant will also continue to offer many of its signature dishes for takeout. Once they've settled into their new business model, the eatery intends to publish weekly menus from which orders can be placed for weekend pickup.

Rossman's parents were longtime local restaurateurs and he worked at their diner, Pam Pam, in Mission Valley before eventually taking over that restaurant space himself in early 2012 to open Bunz Gourmet Burgers. The American breakfast and lunch eatery remains in operation in Hotel Circle.

Terra American Bistro's last day of service is Friday, June 21, at 7091 El Cajon Boulevard in San Diego's College Area. For more information, visit terrasd.com.
