The 20th area location of fast food chain Chick-Fil-A will unveil this week in San Diego's La Jolla.
A new Chick-fil-A restaurant will begin serving the La Jolla community on Thursday, July 18, opening within the nearly 6,000 square-foot building that last housed an Islands Restaurant location within La Jolla Village Square on Nobel Drive. Jared Ciervo is the independent franchised local owner-operator of the new La Jolla Village location, which joins 19 other Chick-fil-A restaurants serving the wider San Diego market.
Founded by S. Truett Cathy in Hapeville, GA, in 1961, Chick-Fil-A now has nearly 3,000 locations around the United States and Canada. Chick-Fil-A was the first national restaurant chain to make a fried chicken sandwich its primary menu item. With an ethos based on its late founder's Southern Baptist beliefs, the company's conservative opposition to same-sex marriage has been the subject of public controversy, although the company has allegedly begun to loosen its stance on this issue in recent years.
In celebration of the opening of the newest branch, Chick-fil-A has donated $25,000 to Feeding America to support local hunger relief efforts of Feeding San Diego. The restaurant will participate in the Chick-fil-A Shared Table program, an initiative that redirects surplus food from the eatery to local soup kitchens, shelters, food banks and nonprofits in need. In addition, Chick-fil-A La Jolla Village is recognizing 100 local heroes making an impact in the San Diego area by providing them with free Chick-fil-A entrées for a year.
