July 18, 2024Los Angeles-based restaurant chain Ono Hawaiian BBQ, which has more than 70 branches, will soon open its first San Diego location.
Brothers Joshua and Joe Liang opened the first Ono Hawaiian BBQ in 2002 at Santa Monica Boulevard and Bundy Drive in Los Angeles, and the company now has more than 70 locations dotted around California and Arizona. The founders were inspired by the diverse culinary traditions of Hawaii, which blend influences from Polynesia, Japan, Korea, and the United States, and hoped to introduce the cuisine to a broader audience.
The first San Diego location of Ono Hawaiian BBQ will open in the space that last housed a Carls Jr. on West Mission Avenue in Escondido. Expect traditional Hawaiian plate lunch dishes like barbecue chicken, chicken katsuk teriyaki chicken, kalbi short ribs, barbecue beef, Kalua pork, grilled fish, crispy shrimp, and more. The restaurant also offers family-size and kids meals, as well as salads, musubi, and soft drinks.
Ono Hawaiian BBQ will open in early 2025 at 555 West Mission Avenue in San Diego's North County city of Escondido. For more information, visit onohawaiianbbq.com.
