Rubio's Oceanside Restaurant Reopens Following Three Year Closure Due To Fire

July 30, 2024

San Diego-based Rubio's Coastal Grill has reopened a location in Oceanside following a three year closure due to a fire.

On "Taco Tuesday" August 6, Rubio’s Coastal Grill will officially open its new prototype restaurant in the heart of Oceanside. This site had been temporarily closed due to a 2021 fire. The all-new restaurant will officially begin serving guests at 10:30am, with a special grand opening party taking place from 4:30-7:30pm. The community is invited to join for live music, complimentary sweet treats, Rubio’s giveaways and a kids' craft table featuring Rubio's canvas bags with stencils and markers for kids to make their own designs. In addition, half of the Grand Opening profits will go to the Boys & Girls Club of Northwest San Diego (formerly Oceanside).

This custom-designed location serves as Rubio’s prototype restaurant. The Oceanside design was inspired by the Baja taco stands where Rubio's Co-Founder Ralph Rubio first ate fish tacos as a college student 41 years ago. It features Instagram-worthy wall décor and art, showcasing Ralph’s historic trips to San Felipe. The location also has a dedicated mobile ordering pickup area and brand-new patio seating.

This past May,  Rubio's Coastal Grill suddenly shuttered more than a dozen locations in the area, with employees alleging they received no advance notice. Less than a week later, the company filed for bankruptcy for the second time in four years. While Rubio’s had to close several of their underperforming locations recently, the Oceanside restaurant had been one of the company’s most popular locations prior to closing in 2021.

After being inspired the fried fish tacos he found in Baja's San Felipe, MX, during a trip during spring break, San Diego-native and SDSU-alum Ralph Rubio founded the first Rubio's restaurant in 1983 at a former Orange Julius site on Mission Bay Drive in the Pacific Beach area of San Diego. Since then, the chain ballooned to a high of over 200 locations and sold more than 200 million fish tacos. The company is now headquartered in Carlsbad, CA, and operates 86 restaurants across Southern California, Arizona and Nevada.

Rubio’s Coastal Grill will reopen on Tuesday, August 6, at 4201 Oceanside Boulevard in San Diego's North County city of Oceanside. For more information, visit rubios.com.
