After a decade in business, Saiko Sake & Sushi is closing its doors in San Diego's North Park community.
Sushi chef Anthony Pascale opened the original Saiko Sushi in Coronado in 2011 and launched a second outpost in San Diego's North Park in 2014. In late 2020, he teamed up with Chef Uthan Dejcomrunkul, who previously cooked at the Original Sab E Lee and Thai Papaya restaurants, and opened Sovereign Thai adjacent to Fault Line Park in San Diego's East Village.
Due to an inability to come to new lease terms with the building's landlord, Saiko Sake & Sushi will close its North Park location after close of business on Saturday, July 27. The Coronado branch at 116 Orange Avenue will continue to operate as normal. It is believed the landlord at the North Park address is looking to demolish the building to building residential housing.
"Well San Diego, it has certainly been an amazing decade," read an announcement on Saiko Sushi's social media channels. "We have loved and cherished our ten years in North Park, but sadly, it is time to say goodbye. We will miss you all, and this restaurant that we built together. Our decision to close was based purely on business. Our lease was up and given the current economic climate we chose not to renew. But know that we are going out on our own terms with our heads held high."
There is no word on what will take over the Saiko Sake & Sushi space at 2884 University Avenue in San Diego's North Park. The 3,200 square-foot unit, along with fixtures and its Type-47 liquor license, is currently being leased by local commercial real estate brokerage Next Wave Commercial.
