Popular American grocery chain, Trader Joe's, will open its newest San Diego locations in the former Best Buy building in Santee on August 1.
On Thursday, August 1, Trader Joe’s will open its highly-anticipated Santee, California store. This 10,072 square-foot location is the first in Santee, located at the intersection of Mission Gorge Road and Cuyamaca Street. Moments before doors open at 9 am, there will be a brief ribbon cutting. Store Captain Keith Miller and Trader Joe’s Crew Members will be on hand to welcome customers to their new neighborhood grocery.

The new store's interior artwork will highlight local landmarks, including Santee Lakes. Trader Joe's will hire eighty new Crew Members from surrounding areas and transfer in twenty-five others from neighboring Trader Joe’s branches. In addition, through the company’s longstanding Neighborhood Shares Program, the new Santee Trader Joe’s will donate 100% of products that go unsold but remain fit to enjoy to a range of non-profit, community-based organizations, seven days a week.
Trader Joe's was founded in 1958 in Pasadena, California, by Joe Coulombe. Initially, it was a small chain of convenience stores called Pronto Markets. However, in 1967, Coulombe rebranded the stores as Trader Joe's and began offering a wider array of specialty foods, including gourmet items and international fare. In 1979, German-native Theo Albrecht, who is also the founder of Aldi grocery, bought the company as a personal investment for his family. The company now has more than 500 locations, including 10 branches in San Diego County with several more on the way.
In addition to new Trader Joe's stores opening this year in Santee and within Poway City Centre, another branch is in the works for the space that last housed a Chuck E. Cheese inside North County Square shopping center in Vista.
Some of Trader Joe's most popular private-label products include its famous "Two-Buck Chuck" wine, frozen meals like Mandarin Orange Chicken and Cauliflower Gnocchi, and snack items like Speculoos Cookie Butter and Everything but the Bagel Seasoning. Like other locations, expect the grocery store to offer a selection of fresh produce, meats, gourmet cheeses, artisanal bread and private-label products at competitive prices, as well as beer, wine and liquor.
